EP 398 - [EON] There Is No End. Get Excellent at What’s Next. | Edge of the Napkin #56 | Paper Napkin Wisdom

There’s an interesting problem that comes with success. The more you build, the more there is to lose. You build a business, a team, a reputation and years of evidence that you’re good at what you do. People expect something from you, and eventually you start expecting something from yourself. Then something doesn’t work. You lose the customer. Revenue drops. A great person leaves. You make a decision you wish you could take back. Failure feels different when you’ve already experienced success.

Winning can create a similar problem. You finally reach the number. You build the team you wanted. You win the championship. You arrive at the place you spent years trying to reach, and suddenly you have to decide what that result means. Was it a destination, or was it evidence that what you were doing worked?

That distinction became increasingly important as I worked on Dynasty DNA. I started this research because I wanted to understand sustained winning. I looked across thirty years and four major professional sports leagues, studying teams that found a way to win repeatedly. Somewhere along the way, something became obvious. You can't really study sustained winning unless you're also willing to study losing.

Every dynasty loses. They lose games and seasons. Great players leave. Coaches change. Injuries happen. Decisions fail. The environment around them changes. The interesting thing about a dynasty isn't its ability to eliminate those moments. It's what happens after them.

The Panthers Had to Learn What Came Next

Look at the Florida Panthers.

In 2023, they made an incredible run to the Stanley Cup Final and lost to Vegas. There are all kinds of meanings a team can attach to a loss like that. Maybe that was our chance. Maybe we aren't quite good enough. Maybe we need to change everything. Maybe we should protect everything because it almost worked.

Florida had another option. They could use the result as information.

They returned to Focus. They got honest about where they were. They acted on what they saw. Then they came back in 2024 and won the Stanley Cup. A year later, they won it again.

That sounds like the perfect ending.

Except dynasties don't really get endings.

Before the following season had properly started, Aleksander Barkov tore his ACL and MCL in training camp. Now the Panthers were dealing with a completely different kind of fall. You can respond to losing a championship by preparing differently or changing the team. You can't work harder and magically repair your captain's knee.

So the challenge changed. What did those years of building actually leave behind? What existed inside the people around Barkov? Had the culture become something larger than one person? The Panthers' journey from the 2023 loss through consecutive championships and into Barkov's absence became one of the clearest examples of the Focus, Align, Act loop in Dynasty DNA. Dynasty DNA 5.2

The loop runs after everything.

That's the piece that matters.

Failure Isn't the Only Thing That Can Stop You

We understand why failure can stop someone. It hurts. It can shake confidence and make you second-guess decisions that once felt easy. When you've been successful for a long time, one bad result can suddenly feel like evidence that something fundamental has changed.

A result can become a verdict.

Something failed. That may be completely true. The meaning you attach to that failure is a different matter.

Maybe you lost an important customer. That doesn't automatically mean your company is slipping. Maybe someone important left. That doesn't automatically tell you what your culture has become. Maybe you made a terrible decision. That decision doesn't get to decide who you are as a leader from this point forward.

This is why I think successful leaders need to get excellent at failing. You aren't trying to enjoy failure. Some losses should hurt. You cared about the result. You worked for it. You wanted it.

Getting excellent at failing means becoming better at what happens next. You notice. You learn. You Align with where you actually are. Then you decide where your attention belongs next and move.

But failure isn't the only result that can stop you.

Winning can do it too.

When you've spent years climbing toward something, reaching it can feel like arrival. You made it. The thing you imagined actually happened. The work worked.

One of the distinctions inside Dynasty DNA is the difference between experiencing a championship as arrival and experiencing it as confirmation. Arrival says you made it. Confirmation says something worked. That difference changes what happens next. Dynasty DNA 5.2

If the win is confirmation, you can celebrate it. You should celebrate it. You can appreciate the people who made it possible and enjoy what you've accomplished. Then you look forward again.

What's the next Focus?

The Identity Trap After Success

This gets especially interesting in business because success creates things worth protecting. You may have employees depending on you, customers who trust you and a family affected by the decisions you make. Maybe there are twenty years of history attached to the company name. Protecting what you've built can feel responsible.

But protection and building aren't the same thing.

Dynasty DNA describes an identity trap that can emerge after winning. An organization starts protecting the identity of being a champion. Its stories point backward. Its decisions start preserving what worked before. People can become untouchable because they were part of the previous success. The championship stops being evidence and becomes something the organization has to defend. Dynasty DNA 5.2

Businesses can do exactly the same thing. You have your best year ever, so you try to repeat it. You keep the same structure. You protect the same products. You rely on the same people in the same roles because they helped produce that result.

Meanwhile, the conditions around you have changed. Customers change. Competitors change. Your people change. You change.

Yesterday's Focus may have been exactly right for yesterday. That doesn't automatically make it right for tomorrow.

This is why winning and failing, which seem like opposites, have more in common than we might think. Both give you information. Both can pull your attention backward. Both can become attached to your identity. Both can leave you protecting something that has already happened.

Eventually, both ask the same thing of you.

What's next?

Focus. Align. Act. Then Do It Again.

The framework underneath Dynasty DNA is Focus, Align, Act.

Focus is where you decide what matters and where you're going. Align is where you get honest about where you actually are relative to that. Act is where you commit and move.

Then something happens.

Maybe you win.

Maybe you fail.

Either way, you have new information. So you Focus again.

The movements connect directly to the traits in the book. More importantly, they operate as a loop. Dynasty leaders don't complete Focus, Align, Act once and graduate from it. They return to the cycle when the season changes, when the challenge changes and when the previous win can no longer carry them forward. Dynasty DNA 5.2

Think about what that means inside a business.

You have your best year ever. Celebrate it. Then look at what the year taught you, notice what has changed and decide what matters now.

You have your worst year in a decade. Feel it. Then look at what the year taught you, notice what has changed and decide what matters now.

Different result. Same opportunity.

Focus again.

The Kansas City Chiefs offer another example in the book. Their extraordinary run eventually encountered a very different result. They missed the playoffs, and Patrick Mahomes was injured in the game that eliminated them. Suddenly one of the great modern sports dynasties had fallen.

The interesting part of that story isn't the fall itself. It's what remains available to rebuild with after it. Dynasty DNA 5.2

That might be a much better measure of what you've built.

Your culture may be easier to see when something breaks. Trust becomes more visible when the plan doesn't work. Accountability matters more when the scoreboard says you lost. Leadership becomes easier to see when yesterday's answer stops working.

You find out what has accumulated.

The Three Dynasty DNA Previews Were Really One Idea

Over these last three Edge of the Napkin episodes, I've been giving you a preview of the thinking inside Dynasty DNA.

Episode 396 started with identity. Identity first. Traits follow. The five traits aren't a checklist to perform. They're evidence of the kind of leader someone has become.

Episode 397 followed those traits outward. Preparation creates credibility. Humility creates trust. Communication creates shared understanding. Accountability creates consistency. Purpose creates meaning. Those deposits accumulate in other people. They create influence, and sustained influence becomes magnetic.

Now Episode 398 puts all of that under pressure.

What happens to your identity when the scoreboard says you lost?

What happens to your influence when things aren't working?

And maybe just as important, what happens to both when the scoreboard says you won?

The loop keeps moving.

Identity creates the traits. The traits create influence. Then life tests what you've built. Sometimes it tests you with failure. Sometimes it tests you with success.

Your job is to notice what happened, learn from it and return to Focus.

Because there is no end.

There is only what's next.

Five Key Takeaways

  1. Winning and failing are both information.A result can teach you something useful. Trouble starts when you turn that result into a permanent statement about who you are or what your organization can become.

  2. Get excellent at failing. You will fall. So will your team and your business. Getting excellent at failing means getting better at noticing, learning, Aligning and moving again.

  3. Get excellent at winning.Success can stop momentum too. Celebrate what worked, but don't build your identity around protecting yesterday's result.

  4. Keep running the loop.Focus, Align, Act isn't a journey with a finish line. The movements repeat because every result changes where you are and gives you new information about where you're going. Dynasty DNA 5.2

  5. There is always a next Focus. The championship isn't the end. Neither is the loss. The best year you've ever had isn't the end, and the worst year you've ever had isn't either. Each one leaves you with the same opportunity to decide what matters next.

Take Action

Pick one result you're carrying right now. It can be something you're proud of or something you wish had gone differently.

Notice the meaning you've attached to it. Separate what actually happened from what you've decided it says about you. Then look at what the result taught you and what has changed since it happened.

Now choose your next Focus.

Because championships are moments. Dynasties are built between them.

Winning isn't the end. It's the next Focus.

Failing isn't the end. It's the next Focus.

There is no end. Get excellent at what's next.
